If one could erase one inning, the regional quarterfinal between Flatonia and
Shiner would have been a good game for the Comanches.
But a game includes every inning, including the 6-run rally by Flatonia in
the third inning last Friday in Weimar.
The Bulldogs had only two hits in the inning but three Comanche errors kept
the inning alive for Flatonia as they added to their 4-2 lead and eventual
10-3 win. Flatonia now advances to the regional semi-final against Johnson
City.
"We were all disappointed in the outcome," said Coach Daniel Boedeker, "but
things like that happen in baseball.
"I told the guys they had a good season overall, especially when we made it
to three rounds in the playoffs."
Shiner opened the game on a positive note with a 2-run home run in the first
inning. After Matthew Hibbs reached on a sacrifice, Kyle Condel connected
with the ball and sent it over the left field fence for a home run. But that
would be all the offense the Comanches could generate until the fifth inning
when they added a single run.

Flatonia answered in the bottom of the first with a run on one hit and an
error. Cote Schacherl was safe on an error and then stole second. Chris Migl
drove him home with a single to cut Shiner's led to one.
Flatonia's Dakota Pinney, who scattered six hits in the game, then shut down
the Comanches the next three innings, with Shiner getting only one runner on
base on an error.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, scored three runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
Dakota Pinney, Jordan Williams, Hunter Pinney and Schacherl each had a single
and the Comanches committed another error.
Flatonia then sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning to score six
runs and up the lead to 10-2. The Bulldogs had just two hits in the inning,
but three walks and three errors had runners rounding the bases before the
side was retired.
Condel then settled down and retired nine of the final 11 batters, striking
out six.
Shiner fought back in the fifth but could score only one run. Gabe McAfee
opened with single, Drew Stafford followed with a double. D.J. Pustka struck
out and Matthew Hibbs hit a fly ball to center to score McAfee. With two
outs, Condel was walked intentionally. Julian Longoria singled to center but
Stafford was thrown out at home on a perfect throw from Jordan Williams from
center field to end the inning.

The Comanches lost another opportunity in the sixth, leaving the bases
loaded. Ryan Lawrence doubled to open the inning, Drew Hagens singled and
Cullen Koenning walked to load the bases. Pinney then struck out the next
three batters to shut down the threat.
In the seventh, Pinney got Hibbs to fly out to left and struck out Condel and
Longoria to preserve his win.
Pinney gave up six hits, four walks and struck out 12. He also had three hits
and drove in a run. Bryce Mica, running for Pinney, scored two runs.
Schacherl had one hit, one run and three RBIs. Scoring two runs apiece were
Jordan Williams and Hunter Pinney.
Condel also struck out 12, walked four and gave up eight hits.
Except for the Shiner miscues, the game was a pretty good match up.
Besides Condel's 2-RBI home run, the Comanches got hits from Stafford,
McAfee, Hagens, Lawrence and Longoria. Hibbs had an RBI sacrifice and scored
a run.
Shiner ends the season with a 17-9-1 record.
