Matt on the golf course OK, FOLKS ... HERE'S THE SITUATION

The Shiner Fellowship of Christian Athletes is hosting "Light the Night with Hope" 5K Run/Walk to benefit Matt Pohler's family. As you may know Matt was a 2012 graduate of Shiner High School and had been fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia since November of 2012. It had been a very long, tough fight. He went through several rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, battled fever, pneumonia and other various infections. In May 2013, Matt received a stem cell transplant in May of 2013 and after months of having to live near the hospital, returned home in August cancer free.

Just seventeen days after his return home, the cancer returned. Matt fought some serious lung complications, and returned to chemotherapy in hopes of remission so that another stem cell transplant could be done. Despite these challenges, Matt continued to stay strong, positive and faithful. On Tuesday, March 25, Matt lost his battle with Leukemia and passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

It's times like these that the blessing of a small community really shines through. "Everyone knowing everyone" can truly have its benefits. We know that if you didn't know Matt personally, you have at least heard how he and his family were impacted by this monster. They continued to fight, and more importantly, have hope. Through it all, they have been an inspiration to us all.

Matt Pohlere Matthew C. Pohler

SHINER - Matthew Charles Pohler, age 20, passed on peacefully Tuesday, March 25, 2014, into the arms of his Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. Matt was surrounded by the family he loved so much. He was born November 11, 1993 in Yoakum to Donald and Gerrie Darilek Pohler.

3/28 UPDATE ... THE RUN WILL GO AHEAD AS PLANNED

Please consider joining us on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Comanche Stadium in Shiner. We'll be hosting a 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk to raise funds for Matt's family. Check-in and Registration are at 6:00pm, the race begins at 7:00pm, and the awards ceremony will follow ... the top 3 male and female runners in each category will receive an award.

We really want to show Matt's family that neither the school nor the community have forgotten their battle. The struggles they have gone through are more than most of us can imagine. We are hoping the support they receive will relieve some of the emotional and financial burden on the family from their long fight.

Even if you can't run or walk, join us at the stadium to show your support for family and friends of Matt. And if you can't make make it that Sunday night, please consider printing a copy of the Entry Form and sending in a donation of your choice.
