The third time was the charm for the Shiner football team Friday night.

After two years of bowing out of the postseason to Mason, the Comanches earned redemption. Shiner (12-1) held the Punchers out of the endzone and received touchdown runs from Evel Jones and Trevion Flowers as well as a touchdown pass between the two as the Comanches snapped two years of heartbreak with a 21-3 victory over previously-unbeaten Mason in the Class 1A-Division I state quarterfinal round Friday at the Kelley Reeves Athletic Complex in Round Rock.

"It’s pretty exciting," Shiner coach Steven Cerny said. "Of course now we have to regroup for another one."

Next up for Shiner is Mart, who won the 1A-DI title two years ago. The Comanches and Panthers will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kelley Reeves in a 1A-DI state semifinal contest.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Comanches struck in big-play fashion. Evel Jones scored on a 74-yard touchdown run to give his team a 7-0 lead with 38 seconds left in the second quarter.

Shiner’s 7-0 lead stood at halftime and after three quarters of play before Rio Schmidt put the Punchers on the board with a 28-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 at the 10:28 mark of the fourth quarter. The Comanches got much-needed insurance when Flowers hit Jones for a 46-yard touchdown pass with 3:43 left to play to increase the Shiner lead to 14-3.

Following an interception thrown by Mason quarterback Elliot Bibb, Flowers put the icing on the cake with a 2-yard score with 1:23 remaining in the contest.

Jones led all rushers with 84 yards on 10 carries, and also had 46 yards receiving on his only catch of the night to finish with 130 yards of total offense.

Flowers ran 17 times for 58 yards and also completed 4-of-5 passes for 71 yards to tally 129 total yards. The Shiner defense also limited Mason (12-1) to a season-low 221 yards of total offense, including a season-low 106 rushing.

The winner of Friday’s contest will meet the Stamford-Italy winner at 4 p.m. Dec. 20 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington for the A-DI state championship.
