Steven Cerny thought his Shiner football team would be in a dogfight against Kenedy on Friday.

Thanks to his team’s defense and running game, the contest was not even close. The Comanches scored the game’s first 33 points and limited the Lions to 153 yards of total offense in a 33-7 rout Friday at Lion Stadium in Kenedy.

Friday’s contest also was the District 15-A-Division I opener for both teams. Shiner (6-1, 1-0 in 15-A-DI) amassed 324 yards of total offense, including 315 on the ground.

The Comanches got things started with a 17-yard touchdown run from Caleb Curtis to take a 7-0 lead at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. They struck again less than three minutes later as Evel Jones scored from 67 yards out to increase the lead to 14-0 with 4:22 left in the opening quarter.

Curtis added a 26-yard touchdown run with 1:06 remaining in the second quarter to put Shiner up 20-0. The Comanches led by the same score at halftime.

Trevion Flowers got into the scoring act with a 3-yard touchdown run to increase the Shiner lead to 26-0 at the 6:55 mark of the third quarter. Flowers hit Jones for a 9-yard touchdown to cap the scoring for the Comanches at 33-0 with 1:53 left in the third.

Kenedy (4-2, 0-1 in 15-A-DI) put points on the scoreboard with 2:18 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a 12-yard touchdown run from Rolando Zepeda. Zepeda’s touchdown run capped the scoring at 33-7.

Flowers led all rushers with 108 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Jones (5 carries, 85 yards, TD), Curtis (5-52, 2 TDs), Brady Cejka (6-27) and Jacob Stafford (8-25) also contributed to Shiner’s ground game.

The Comanches have a bye this week and return to the field Oct. 26 when they host Three Rivers.
