Comanches come up short

Nate Kowalik completed 17-of-26 passes for 385 yards and six touchdowns as Hallettsville soared past Shiner, 49-28, Friday at Comanche Stadium in Shiner. Trenton McGee caught five of Kowalik’s six touchdown passes, and finished the game with 259 receiving yards on eight catches.

The Comanches struck first on a 12-yard touchdown run from Trevion Flowers to give them a 7-0 lead at the 7:18 mark of the first quarter. But Kowalik hit McGee for a 46-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7 with 4:59 left in the opening quarter.

Kowalik and McGee connected again for a 49-yard score with no time remaining in the first quarter, and Tim Sheppard hit Teidric Smith for the two-point conversion to give Hallettsville (2-0) a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kowalik hit McGee for a 9-yard touchdown to give the Brahmas a 21-7 lead at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter before Flowers scored from 59 yards out to cut the lead to 21-14 with 8:24 left in the period.

Kowalik and McGee struck again on the ensuing possession as they combined for a 35-yard touchdown pass at the 6:00 mark of the second quarter. Jacob Stafford scored from six yards out to cut Hallettsville’s lead to 28-20 with 1:11 left before halftime.

Kowalik hit McGee in stride for a 72-yard score to give the Brahmas a 35-20 lead at the 10:14 mark of the third quarter. Shiner (1-1) didn’t score on its ensuing drive, but Evel Jones returned a Kowalik interception 83 yards for a score and Flowers hit Brady Cejka for a two-point conversion to cut the Hallettsville lead to 35-28 with 7:17 left in the third quarter.

Kowalik hit Carson Schindler for an 18-yard touchdown to put the Brahmas up 41-28 at the 5:17 mark of the third. The score remained the same until Smith scored on a 13-yard run and caught a two-point conversion pass from Kowalik to give Hallettsville a 49-28 lead with 3:13 left to play in the contest.

Smith led all rushers with 156 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Flowers led the Comanches with 96 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Shiner hosts Schulenburg at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Comanche Stadium.
