AUSTIN—The Mason Punchers took control of the game with three straight touchdowns by David Mora Friday to end the Shiner Comanches’ storybook season in the quarterfinals by a 28-21 score at Burger Center.

The teams battled to a 7-7 tie before the Comanches’ Wesley Patek put Shiner on top with a 77-yard scoring run in the third period, but Mora scored on runs of 23 and 10 yards to close out the third and dashed in from 11 yards out with 6:09 remaining in the game to give the Punchers a 14-point lead. Mora finished with 44 carries for 290 yards.

The Comanches came back to score again with 5:08 left when Patek hit Evel Jones with a 13-yard TD toss, but Shiner couldn’t muster another rally to tie it.

Shiner had taken a 7-0 lead in the opening period when Patek scored from five yards out, but the Punchers rallied to tie the game at the half when Dillon Estes tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Kramer Watson just before halftime.

Mora accounted for 290 of Mason’s 294 rushing yards, while Patek carried six times for 101 yards and hit five of 11 passes for 65 more in the losing effort.

The setback ended a storybook season for Shiner, which began the season 1-6 before winning three straight games to make the playoffs, then dominating in their first two playoff outings.
