The Comanches responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on no hits to tie it at 3-3. Chase O'Connor reached on an error and Mark Casteel was safe on a fielder's choice as O'Connor was safe at second on an error. O'Connor scored on a bases loaded walk and Casteel crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Shiner took a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning with Jared Boedeker and O'Connor scoring. Boedeker ripped a triple and O'Connor walked. Both scored on pitching errors. The Wildcats fought back in the seventh, but fell one run short. Brett Gipps was safe on a fielder's choice and scored on Strieber's triple. Strieber was then caught stealing home (on a suicide bunt attempt) for the second out and Condel, who relieved Kloesel in the sixth, got Ted Dugie swinging for the third out. In the first playoff round, Shiner will play Fayetteville on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:30pm at Veteran's Memorial Ballpark in Weimar. Shiner won 5-4 in seven innings ... Colton Henley, Ryan Kloesel and Kyle Condel pitched for the Comanches. Condel picked up the win as Shiner advanced their record to 22-3, including 15 in a row. The Shiner boys hit the ball well all night, but almost always directly at a Yorktown defender. In the 5th, Shiner got two men on base, then Yorktown intentionally walked senior C Chris Baer to load the bases. The next batter, senior 2B Justin Joslin walked, forcing in a run. A passed ball scored another runner. In the crucial 6th inning, senior 3B Jared Boedeker knocked a triple to the outfield, scoring junior SS Ryan Kloesel. Boedeker then scored the winning run on another passed ball. The Wildcats put many men on base, but could not quite get it done at the end. With one out and the tying run on third (Strieber), they attempted a suicide squeeze ... the batter missed the bunt and Shiner C Chris Baer ran the man down and tagged him on his way back to third. Condel struck out the last batter for the win. ========================= PLAYOFF ROUND #1 - BI-DISTRICT (Shiner vs. Fayetteville - One Game - Tuesday, May 17, 2005 @ 8:00pm in Weimar, Texas) Comanches whip Fayetteville 12-2 by Mike Forman, Victoria Advocate Sports Writer WEIMAR - Shiner was in double figures in runs, hits, and runners left on base, but none of those matched Scott Shimek's strikeout totals against Fayetteville. Shimek struck out 15 while pitching a four-hitter to lead the Comanches to a 12-2 Class 1A bi-district victory on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Park's Strickland Field. Shiner improved to 23-3 on the season and advanced to the area round against the winner of tonight's game betwewen Benavides and Kingsville Academy. The Lions ended the season at 14-10. Shimek took a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh before Fayetteville had two hits and scored a pair of unearned runs. "He competed well," Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker said of Shimek. "He's done a good job all season. He's our leader. It all starts with him on the mound." Shimek struck out the side three times, and twice had four strikeouts in an inning. He also had three of Shiner's 12 hits, including two doubles and three RBIs. "I'm proud of the way we hit the ball," Boedeker said. "This is a good way to start. I'm sure we had some nerves, but we kept playing ball and I was proud of that." The Comanches took the lead for good in the top of the first inning when Justin Joslin singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on the first of two hits by Ryan Kloesel. Shiner made it 5-0 in the third with four hits, including Dylan Hagens' two-run double. Hagens was making his first apperance of the season after suffering a shoulder injury in football and went 2- for-4 with three RBIs as a designated hitter. Shimek's first double and an RBI single by Hagens brought home two runs in the sixth before the Comanches broke the game open with five runs in the seventh, two coming on Shimek's second double. "We had opportunities early to score some runs, which we didn't do," Boedeker said. "We just need to keep putting the ball in play consistently like we did and we'll score runs." ----------- Comanches beat Fayetteville Shiner Gazette, Thursday, May 12, 2005 Scott Shimek did his job on the mound and the Shiner bats backed him up in a 12-2 win over Fayetteville in the Class 1A bi-district game played at Strickland Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Weimar. The win sends Shiner (23-3) to the area round against Benavides (22-5) in a best of three series this week. Shimek fanned 15 batters, walked none and gave up only four hits. Shimek also had three of Shiner's 15 hits, including a double and two RBIs. Shimek had a 12-0 shut out going into the seventh but the Lions scored two unearned runs to spoil his perfect outing. "Shimek did a great job. The game started with him,"said Coach Daniel Boedeker. "We hit the ball the best we have all season. Having Dylan Hagens back really helped," he added. Boedeker was also very pleased with the defense which came up with some good plays, including a 6-4 double play on a line drive to the shortstop. Shiner took a 1 -0 lead in the first inning when Justin Joslin singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Ryan Kloesel's single. The Comanches added four runs in the third on four hits. Shimek and Kloesel opened with singles, advanced on Jared Boedeker's sacrifice and scored on Dylan Hagens double. Hagens played in his first 2005 game after recuperating from a football injury and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Following a ground out by Chase O'Connor, Mark Casteel was hit by a pitch and Kyle Condel drew a walk to load the bases. Chris Baer ripped a 2-RBI single and the Comanches led 5-0. Shiner tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a single by Baer, double by Shimek, single by Jared Boedeker and single by Hagens. The Comanches sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits. Five lead-off batters got on base with Condel, Joslin and Shimek getting hits and Baer and Kloesel drawing walks. All five scored with the help of two more walks and an error. Shimek's shut out was spoiled in the bottom of the seventh as Fayetteville came up with two hits and Shiner committed some defensive miscues. Joseph Noska opened with a single. Wesley Gaertner drove a high fly that went over the head of Casteel in left field for a double. Shimek fanned the next two batters and got the third to strike out. The ball took a bad hop and got away from Baer and the runner was safe at first. Kyle Condel then dropped a short fly to center before Shimek ended the game with his fourth strikeout of the inning. Shiner's 15-hit attack included three hits by Shimek and two each by Baer, Joslin, Kloesel and Hagens. Casteel and Condel each had one hit. The first game of the regional quarterfinal game against Benavides was scheduled for May 17 in Alice at 8 p.m. Game 2 will be played Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Shiner and Game 3, if needed, will be set later. "Benavides has a good pitcher who stands out real well. They are a good solid team and he makes them better," said Boedeker. The Comanches scored 5 of their 6 runs in one very big second inning. With the bases loaded, senior C Chris Baer hit a hard ground ball past the shortstop to score the first 2 Shiner runners. Senior 3B Jared Boedeker reached first, then senior P Scott Shimek hit the ball out of the infield to score two more runs. The Comanches batted completely around before the Eagles could manage the third out. In the bottom of that same inning, Benavides hit the ball well and the Comanches missed several opportunities to get the out ... the Eagles scored three. In the third, senior 2B Justin Joslin reached first, then Baer hit a grounder that was fielded but the throw to first went wide. Joslin continued to third, but Benavides overthrew that base and Joslin scored. The big difference in the game was errors: Benavides was credited with seven errors on the game, including several missed grounders and overthrows. Besides that, there were only a few baserunners and it was mostly a pitching duel. Scott Shimek struck out 14 while allowing only 4 hits. Benavides P Geoffrey Bennett got stronger as the game went along and got many Shiner batters out on only 3 or 4 pitches. But the offensive output of the second game didn't carry over to the third and deciding game as the Comanches got only two hits in a 7-1 loss. All three games were played at Leroy Dryer Field in Brenham. The loss eliminated the Comanches from a possible return to the state tournament, finishing the 2005 season with a 26-5 record. Thorndale (29-5) goes on to play Ben Bolt in the Region IV-1A final. Shiner's hitting offense hit a slump in the first game of the series with only four hits. The Comanches had a burst of energy in game 2, scoring 13 runs on 10 hits, and were back in the race. But the hits didn't come in the deciding contest and the Comanches went down in defeat. ----------- GAME ONE: Thorndale 3, Shiner 2 [Game 1 of 3 - Tuesday, May 25, 2005 @ 7:30pm at Leroy Dreyer Field, Blinn Junior College in Brenham] The Comanches were swinging in the first game of the series but they weren't connecting as they struck out 15 times in the 3-2 loss. Wade Gilchrist got 14 Comanches swinging for outs and one on a called strike. Shiner had only four hits, two by Jared Boedeker, one by Scott Shimek and a RBI double by Dylan Hagens. The Comanches lost an opportunity to take command in the first inning when they loaded the bases with no outs but failed to score. Chris Baer was hit by a pitch and Jared Boedeker followed with a single. Scott Shimek walked to load the bases. After Ryan Kloesel struck out, Dylan Hagens hit a grounder to third. Jeff Kiesling made a great play on the ball, stepped on third for the force and got Hagens at first for a double play to end the inning. "I think that was the key play of the whole series," said Coach Daniel Boedeker. "We had the bases loaded with no outs and came away with nothing. It was a letdown for us and swung the momentum to them," he said. From then the Comanches went down in order until the fourth inning when Shimek opened with a single. Pinch runner A.J. Perez took second on a wild pitch and scored on Dylan Hagens' double. Hagens then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk. That would be all for the Comanches as only two more batters reached base. Boedeker singled and stole second to open the sixth but Shiner batters failed to bring him around. Chase O'Connor was safe on a strikeout in the seventh. He also stole second but was stranded as Gilchrist fanned the next two batters to end the game. Scott Shimek scattered eight hits and pitched out of several jams. Except for the first inning, he was backed up by good defense. The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning on only one hit and two Shiner errors. Miles Grisham drew a walk, stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on a passed ball. With one out, Kiesling was safe on an error and advanced to third on Ryan Lindemann's single. Lindemann was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal and was tagged out by Henley at first but not before Kiesling scored on the play. Thorndale scored their third run in the third inning when Ross Towery singled, stole second and scored on Kiesling's single. Shimek worked out of a situation in the fifth, leaving the bases loaded and again in the sixth, stranding one. The Shiner ace struck out five and walked three. Henley faced 18 batters in the game. Besides the two hits, he walked four but picked off two of those at first base. Shiner blew the game open in the fourth with seven hits to score 10 runs. Fourteen Comanches went to the plate with Baer getting two hits and Chase O'Connor and Justin Joslin scoring two runs each. Shiner took a 2-0 lead with Baer, who walked, and Scott Shimek, who singled, both crossing the plate. Mark Casteel added a run in the second and it was a 3-1 game before the fourth-inning explosion. Shimek and Joslin each had two hits, three RBIs and two runs. Casteel had two hits, an RBI and two runs, while Baer had two hits and two runs scored. Jared Boedeker and Kyle Condel each had a single. Baer had a single and scored Shiner's only run in the first inning. His second hit came in the third with one out and was left stranded on second. Baer and Kyle Condel drew walks in the fifth inning but again the hits did not come. Colton Henley, who did a superb job in the shortened first game of the day, started on the mound for Shiner. The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the first inning on two hits and an error. Henley gave up two hits in the second but managed to get out of the inning. He walked a batter to begin the fourth and after giving up a single, was relieved by Scott Shimek. Henley did good job to begin the game but he got no offensive help at the plate from the rest of the Comanches. Shiner's hitting woes continued for the rest of the game as Thorndale's pitchers silenced the Comanche bats with no hits through the final four innings. The Bulldogs added a tally in the fifth for a 3-1 lead before sealing the victory with a 4-run rally in the sixth. Shimek worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on four hits. Ryan Kloesel finished the game, gave up one hit and got the third out. Ryan Lindemann, who pitched five innings, picked up the win for Thorndale. Lindemann gave up the two hits to Baer, walked two and struck out four. Wade Gilchrist, who won the first game of the series, relieved Lindemann in the sixth inning and gave up no hits. Gilchrist, Lindemann and Preston Falke led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits each. "It was a disappointing loss for us but I have to give our kids credit for a good effort throughout the year," said Boedeker. "Thorndale has a good team and I have to give them credit for their effort," he said. "We just hit a slump at the wrong time. Our kids hit the ball well but didn't get the hits," he added. Boedeker praised the kids for a good season. He said Shiner will have a good group coming back next year, but the seniors will be missed. Among those are catcher Chris Baer, pitcher Scott Shimek, second baseman Justin Joslin, third baseman Jared Boedeker and outfielder Chase O'Connor.
