Refugio deals Shiner 38-27 district loss

Trailing Shiner 27-25 with less than four minutes left in the game ( on Friday, October 21, 2022 ), the Refugio Bobcats avoided a third-straight loss to the Comanches with 13 points in that time span.

Jordan King scored on a 45-yard run with the two-point play no good with 3:18 left in the fourth frame.

Refugio added an insurance score with a 56-yard run by Eziiyah Bland with 1:51 left.

The 'Cats opened scoring with a 26-yard run by Jordan in the first quarter and went up 12-0 at the 9:19 mark of the second on a 40-yard pass from Kelan Brown to Ernest Campbell.

Ryan Peterson tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Carson Schuette to get Shiner on the board, 12-7, with six minutes left in the half.

Bland scored on a 75-yard run to increase the 'Cats lead to 19-7; the Comanches answered with a 53-yard run from Dalton Brooks at the 5:28 left in the second.

Brooks scored on a 39-yard run with 3:42 left in the third to give Shiner their first lead, 21-19. Refugio came back with an 89-yard run by Bland and Shiner took the lead right back as Peterson found Keenan Hailey for a 66-yard touchdown pass.

Refugio's offense dinged Shiner's defense for 524 yards and 423 yards on the ground led by Bland who ran for 287 yards and three touchdowns.

Shiner was held in check on the ground with 187 yards, led by Brooks' 164 yards and two touchdowns. Peterson went 6-of-15 throwing for 182 yards, three picks and two touchdowns. Drew Wenske had two catches for 50 yards, Brooks had a 34-yard reception with Schuette and Hailey getting one catch, which each went for a touchdown.

Shiner is off this week and finishes the regular season Nov. 4 by hosting Kenedy.
